My favourite 10 movies from 2014 with the caveat that a) some movies that may make the list havent been released in Oz yet and b) some movies i didnt get around to seeing. My creiteria is basically whether I enjoyed it, was it memorable adn would I watch it again. In no particular order: 1) Raid 2. A symphony of violence that ranged from beautiful to hilarious. 2) The Babadook. Great horror movie that was genuinely scary and which had the best ending of any horror movie in ages. 3) Predestination. A queer time travel movie that makes Looper look like child plays. This will do your head in, but as soon as its finished youll want to watch it all again immediately. Sarah Snook is incredible. 3) Locke. making up for the Bane tragedy, this entire movie is just Tom Hardys lips. Well almost. This monologue as movie shows you the power of excellent writing, as we listen to Lockes life unfold and unravel over one car journey and a series of phone calls. 4) Snowpiercer. Reminding us of the power of allegory, this is THE dsytopian movie benchmark. 5) Only Lovers Left Alive. The oh so louche vampires played by Hiddleston and Swinton create a deep love story, and show that it is still possible to tell an original vampire story. 6) Tusk. Kevin Smiths body horror movie that started from a discussion on a podcast will leave you with images and a tale that is unforgettable. 7) Under the Skin. Scar Jo seems to be in everything, but this disturbingly erotic scifi flick is her best. 8) Edge of Tomorrow. Suffered from shit marketing and the fact that lots of people dont like Tom Cruise. But its an awesome time loop movie and Emily Blunt is great. 9) Mockingjay. Katniss is one of my fav heroes of all time, because shes difficult, and often unlikeable and i love this part of the tale that sees her transformation into a propoganda tool. but also DONT GO BACK FOR THE CAT. 10) Nightcrawler. Mainly for LA reasons, but also because Jakey G is sooo creepy good, it skewers news as entertainment and is unexpectedly funny. Honorable mentions to all the movies that I wanted to love more than I did but enjoyed a lot. Winter Soldier is the best of them. Others include Guardians (which just made me want the Gamora/Nebula prequel), Interstellar, Godzilla and the Ape movie coz damn a monkey with two AK47s riding a horse through a fireball is worth the price of admission!
