My fellow Santa Fe author George R.R. Martin (GAME OF THRONES) - TopicsExpress

My fellow Santa Fe author George R.R. Martin (GAME OF THRONES) made a very public announcement (in the national news) that he would be happy to show Sonys controversial THE INTERVIEW at the independent movie theater he owns here in Santa Fe--the Jean Cocteau. Hell get his wish. Along with 300 independent theaters across the United States, the Cocteau will show THE INTERVIEW for 2 weeks, starting Christmas Day. Some people will no doubt maintain that the hacking scandal was engineered by Sony to promote the film, in a WAG THE DOG conspiracy. But 300 theaters is a far cry from the originally planned 3,000, and there are currently 6 class-action legal suits against Sony for allegedly not doing enough to protect the social security numbers of 48,000 employees, so its hard to imagine that this was in fact a clever scheme. In an earlier Facebook post, I said that the controversy might change the way we see movies in theaters. One short-term effect is that we see the value of independent theaters and their willingness to show material that major chains wont make available.
