My first 5K update... I did walk to the first color station myself, and made it half way to the second color station while walking. We had brought the transport chair with us, in case I needed to sit down… I did sit down and used my feet to move the chair (semi-walking) actually could really feel it in my calves, but at least my knees got a little relief. I did get up and walk some more… then I needed a break, so mom pushed me in the chair for a little ways, but that was tough on her, so I got up again and walked a little bit, by the time we got to the water station we only had less than a mile to go… a really nice young man at the water station offered to push me for a little while to give me and my mom a break, which was nice! There was a canine unit driving behind us as we were the last participants in the pack… every time we passed through an intersection, they cleared the road blocks behind us… but everyone was so kind… We did end up taking the officer up on a ride on his ATV for the last ¾ mile, it was uphill and neither of us had it in us to move anymore. I had them drop me before the finish line because I wanted to walk through it myself… which I did! All in all I’m glad I did it! Something that totally surprised me were the many strangers we passed along the route, they were already on their way to the finish line so we passed in the opposite direction, they were smiling at me, clapping for me, running by and giving me high fives… Kept saying things like, good for you, you can do this, you got this... some even cheered a few times & the cop behind us would squawk the alarm… Mom and I were both surprised that people were so nice and encouraging… in my everyday life I get more negative reactions from people when they see me… this was a nice change... It really made me feel good! So anyway, no, I did not make it the whole way on my feet… but I am so happy that I did it! I’m still in pain, but it’s a good pain… (I think) LOL! Here are a few pics before and after the race… I kinda look like a Smurf… We even got the dogs a little colorful when we got home :)
