My first initiation into modern jazz was with Shape of Things to Come by George Benson. I borrowed the cassette from Una, who was only 13 then, and knew about the various genres of music that we in our ignorance used to club together as western. And then she talked animatedly about jazz, New Orleans, Take Five, Dave Brubeck. I loved the 3D images on the cover and was fascinated with the music. It was such a welcome break from the daily diet of Hindustani and Tagore at home. This music told me that you can be free, can think out of the box, dont have to sit for the lower-division clerks exam of the West Bengal govt. By the time I could return the cassette to Una, she had somehow chosen to surrender her freedom behind the toughened glass windows of a mental asylum. No matter how much I tried to wave the tape at her, shouting, hey, why not try this once again, her stare was fixed beyond me, at the nothingness in the distance. I remember looking back a couple of times to check if theres something or someone else she is looking at, but no. She wasnt looking at all. Heres playing Shape of Things to Come, for you, dear little girl, wherever you are. Couldnt find you on Facebook, did Scott Joplin return your call? youtube/watch?v=7o88sr0339A
