My first official album purchase was in 68 or 69 at Woolworths at Edens Plaza in Wilmette. It was an 88 cent cut out of the first pressing of Buffalo Springfields first self titled album without For What Its Worth which was added to the LP later after it became a hit. One of the original cuts from the album was dropped on future pressings to make way for it. Not long after though, I ordered Retrospective; Best of Buffalo Springfield from the Record Club of America which had cheap prices and no card to return if you didnt want the album of the month. Oh for the days when the biggest decision was which album to drop your 3.99 or less on! Obviously from the size of my current collection, I made a lot of those decisions. Retrospective contained a Neil Young song sung by Richie Furay, kind of unusual but it might have been recorded after Neil had departed and Richies vocal was great actually. Richie and Jim Messina put together the final Springfield album Last Time Around after Stills and Young split in order to fulfill their contract to ATCO Records. But Richie was that kind of guy and still is, only now as Pastor Richie he takes care of people instead of things. As with so many songs from those days whether by The Byrds, Poco, Gene Clark, Gram Parsons or the Burritos, theres lines that still pierce the armor Im still struggling to get into to ward off another poison dart. On The Way Home is one such song which Neil reclaimed with a great solo version on CSNYs Four Way Street album. When the dream came, I held my breath with my eyes closed/I went insane like a smoke ring day when the wind blows/Now I wont be back til later on if I do come back at all/but you know me and I miss you now....
