My first trip to Scotland was a trip I will never forget. Storms over Chicago so hours late landing in Atlanta and missed the flight to Charleston. Slept (?) the night in the airport and caught the first flight to Charleston the next morning to be about four hours late to check in. I was scheduled for a flight with a submarine crew and the flight didnt leave until early afternoon. We stopped in Bangor, Maine for some reason, and finally reached Preswick just after 0000. By the time we got through what passed for customs and the sub crew left, seven of us were left on our tod. Five were going to Thurso and knew how to get there. I cannot remember the other guys last name, but Terry and I were trying to get to Edzell. We had no clue. We went with the Thurso bound guys to the Glasgow airport, and then the cabbie took Terry and me to the local police station. The police instructed, in a foreign language, at least to me, the cabbie to take us back to the airport so we could have a place to spend the night and to bring us back to the station at 0700. When we returned the policeman asked if we were ready for some breakfast. Me being the son of a short order cook and her husband thought local diner. No way, this policeman took us home, started cooking a Scottish breakfast, woke his wife and told her, woke his kids so they could meet real US Navy personnel. After eating we sat around talking, it was becoming a little easier to converse, and at 0900 the policeman took us downtown Glasgow to a bank and got our money exchanged. He was still in uniform and asked the exchange rate and stood right there and saw to it we got the right money back. Then he took us to the rail station, helped us get the tickets to Montrose, bought a platform pass and got us on the right train and gave instructions on exchanging trains in Dundee. When we got to Montrose, a cabbie took us to base, and told us the faire was 25 bob. I handed him a pound note. Instantly we became the new guys on base.
