My flight home yesterday. I saw the light (ning) by chris kuehn 9.00 I leave the apartment and drive to the airport. 11:50 we take off from Tenerife 13:30 mild prolonged turbulence 16:00 the captain prepares for landing, heavy turbulence 16:05 lightning strike on right wing. Passenger in front of us is joking about it with his very scared girlfriend. 16:07 massive lightning strike to right wing which I see clearly. This lit up the entire cabin but no thunder noise. Passenger in front of us goes quiet. Some screams from other passengers. 16:09 my sister grips my forearm in a motherly fashion. We have no eye contact. 16:10 my armpits smell like 5 east European have been working on a building site sharing my T shirt. But this is the last of my worries. 16:15 about 50m from the ground still cant see through the fog very well and then the plane dips violently to the right. The captain powers up and aborts the landing at the last second. 16:17 I get my phone out and start recording. I do this so I dont have to look at my sister who had to go on a British airways flying course as she was petrified of flying. 16:20 Captain starts to circle and the lightning and turbulence continues. 16:30 Captain informs us that we have to divert to Luton airport. Question, What do you think was the reaction from the majority of the passengers? Answer, absolute silence. Not one moan or sigh from anyone! This tells me that everyone was relieved not to try again. 17:00 we land in luton to applause. First time I have ever clapped. 17:35 fire truck turns up and the Ryanair staff are overheard saying dont mention the fire truck 17:55 55 minutes on the ground and we have had no information from any staff. 18:00 we finally disembark. 1 hour later and miles from the terminal. 18:25 we leave the terminal and wait for buses to take us to Stansted. 19:20 we are freezing and the busses finally turn up. 20:29 we get off the buss and have to get another buss to the car park. 21:00 we leave the car park and drive home. 22:00 I finally get home to a cold romantic meal my wife had prepared hours earlier. Ryanair cant be held responsible for the weather. But we were stuck on the ground with no information for an hour after the worst experience of everyones life. It took Ryanair 2 hours 20 minutes to organise a buss to take us to Stanstead. Wankers.
