My former student and friend Peter DAgostino recently died. The - TopicsExpress

My former student and friend Peter DAgostino recently died. The first time I met Peter he came up to me at the opening of school cookout the fall after I returned from sabbatical. He had lots of questions for me about Israel and Palestine – well considered, thoughtful questions he’d developed from having friends who lived there as well as reading on his own. I then had the privilege of spending a whole year discussing right and wrong with Peter in my Ethics course. In my final comment for him, I wrote, “Peter is dedicated to living an ethical, thoughtful life far beyond the limits of a class on ethics, so I am not surprised that he brought so much to our discussions. He challenged himself on topics he had previously considered, and his willingness to question his own positions was a model for the class.” Just this month, a year and a bit after graduating, Peter still kept me, and the class, in mind. He sent me a very funny study testing whether getting people intoxicated changed how they responded to a particularly well-known thought experiment in ethics. He was humorous, caring and genuine. I’m grateful for having known Peter.
