My friend Bill explains Libertarianism: Your problem is you cant put me in a little box. At some point every Libertarian utters this pompously narcissistic line. Libertarians confuse the inability to pull together ideas into a definable ideological framework with being an original thinker. Actually, theyre just intellectually lazy. Libertarians scoop up their random likes and dislikes, dump them on your table and smile proudly. You look at the mess on the table and then you look at them. You say, This isnt coherent. It makes no sense. And they say: Its because I cant be put in a box. Im my own guy. Im an original thinker. Instead of talking about what every other ideology talks about--the larger vision of society and humanity--Libertarians just want to talk about themselves. When you say, Look, man. I dont want to talk about you and what an original thinker you think you are, its boring to me. I want to talk about societys bigger issues, they say, You just dont want to talk about the facts. The fact is, youre a narcissitic bore, you tell them. Thats the fact. No, Im not. You just cant put me in a box is all. Youre close-minded. No, seriously. Youre boring, you say. No, Im not. Im just an individual thinker. Im not a sheep. See, Im the kind of guy who-- No, youre doing it again. Youre talking about yourself again and pretending its an ideology. Its not. Youre just talking about yourself. What are you so afraid of? Im afraid of being bored to death. And you slam the door on them. A minute goes by. And suddenly they start knocking on your door. Hello? Hello? Engage me. Talk to me. Youd really like me if you got to know me. We have a lot in common. Hello...? Thats Libertarians.
