My friend Jonathan Bennett asked an interesting question on Saturday evening. In Avery County, to the north of Hensons Creek, is Doublehead Mountain and Doublehead Gap. From 1744-1807, there was a Cherokee warrior by the name of Doublehead (Tal-tsutsa) According to Wikipedia, Doublehead was one of the Cherokee who visited George Washington in Philadelphia in 1791. He would later become chief of the Chickamauga. Now my question: just how did Avery Countys Doublehead Mountain/Gap get its name?
