My friend Kenton has been ripped off. Again. He created a piece - TopicsExpress

My friend Kenton has been ripped off. Again. He created a piece a while back called The LOVE Effect and marketed it to magicians and mentalists in a manuscript named ANTI-TADA. Now, some other people are releasing their version of his work, without his permission. I know not all of my friends here are into magic, and thats okay. (Hell, its probably a good thing.) You might not know who Kenton is. But youve seen this sort of theft before. Most of you probably heard about Shia LaBeouf ripping off Daniel Clowes. Or Katy Perrys song Roar being pretty much her version of Sara Bareilles Brave. I chose those two examples for a reason: sometimes, artistic theft is blatantly obvious, like Shia LaBeoufs. He more or less made a photocopy of Clowes work and released it as his own. Most of us would agree thats wrong. Simple. Other times, its not so easy. Katy Perrys song is VEERRRRY similar to Brave, but not an exact copy. Its a little off. By one way of thinking, its possible that nobody in her camp realized the similarity. And Bareilles has been gracious in this uncomfortable situation: she and Perry are peers, and theres not much to be gained from a drawn-out public fight. Kenton has dealt with both of these types of theft before. Sometimes publicly, sometimes privately. And while Im sure hell continue to create new works, it has to be frustrating. The only product I ever released for magicians was a podcast that I hosted with Andrew Payne. We worked very hard on it, even before the first episode was released. And within a few months, some other people had copied our show. They took our format, some of our ideas, and sometimes they even quoted us verbatim, all without attribution. But the podcast was my hobby. This is Kentons livelihood. And as he mentions here, others are profiting tremendously from his hard work. Elsewhere this evening, he mentioned that when confronted, these people often claim ignorance. But you only get to claim that once. Then, you have to make it right. I hope this time, these people do the right thing. And hey, if youre not familiar with Kentons work, you should check out his site: wonderwizards/ A lot of this stuff is pretty deep, and is meant for magicians/mentalists who already have a working knowledge of the art form. And for the rest of you normal people, check out his Tibetan Singing Bowl music site: bowlsounds/
