My friend Reggie Gaskins just asked a question as to why their doesnt seem to be more African American representation at these award shows? Why are we not represented in larger numbers? Guess what people, until we decide to support our own more and support grass root indie and major studio projects by good African American filmmakers why should Hollywood care? We dont support our own as we should so why should they? We will spend a ton of money on everyone but ourselves. Now am I saying patronize black films to the exclusion of all else? Absolutely not. Support the arts period. But we have to beg people to come to a play or a film, but you will stand outside a sneaker store for two damn days to give away your money, but you wont support your own for ten or twenty dollars. Thats ridiculous. This goes deeper than supporting filmmakers, we just dont support period. We buy things from everyone and take our money elsewhere. So until we decide that we as a people are important enough to support, we wont. But heres the funny thing. When that black actor/actress/musician/whatever gets a white agent or whatever then all those up to that point non supportive and silent black folk come out the woodwork with their unwanted opinions. You didnt support them when they were trying to get there so why speak now. You werent invested in them making it. So they can get whomever they want. You want them to stay in your camp. Then open your wallet and show your support. See a great film by a filmmaker/director/writer of color or a women, support it. Otherwise well keep looking at these shows and snot seeing us. That is all.
