My friend Terry R Green posted a portion of this song. And it brought back to my mind, the hymn and the story of the songs inspiration. To me this story is nearly as inspiring as the song itself, a testimony of the grace of God and the peace of God that passes understanding He keeps me singing was written in 1910 by Luther B bridges from North Carolina who began preaching at the age of 17, while attending Ash Berry College in Kentucky. He later became a respected pastor and evangelist and church planter. The Lord gave him a wonderful wife and three sons. in 1910Luther when was 26 he took his family to his wife’s home in Harrodsburg Kentucky, they were going to stay with his parents. While Luther was on the road preaching. One evening a nearby neighbor, unable to sleep roles in the night and glanced out his window, he was horrified to see the flames racing across the field. He gave the alarm. But by this time the house was fully engulfed. Luther’s in-laws escaped, but his wife and his sons perished. During the long, slow recovery from overwhelming grief Luther suffered deep and almost suicidal depression, according to some sources, but he recalled the Bibles promise of songs and night, and several months later, he wrote both the words and the music for the gospel song about God’s ability to keep him singing. Notice how he alludes to this tragedy in verse 4 “Though some times he leads to waters deep, Trials for cross the way Though sometimes the path seems rough and steep. See his footprints all the way. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, sweetest name I know feels my every longing keeps me singing as I go (*then sings my soul by Robert J Morgan) 1. Theres within my heart a melody; Jesus whispers sweet and low: Fear not, I am with thee; peace be still, In all of lifes ebb and flow. Refrain: Jesus, Jesus, Jesus --- Sweetest name I know, Fills my every longing, Keeps me singing as I go. 2. All my life was wrecked by sin and strife; Discord filled my heart with pain. Jesus swept across the broken strings, Stirred the slumbring chords again. 3. Feasting on the riches of His grace, Resting neath His sheltring wing, Always looking on His smiling face --- That is why I shout and sing. 4. Though sometimes He leads through waters deep, Trials fall across the way; Though sometimes the path seems rough and steep, See His footprints all the way. 5. Soon Hes coming back to welcome me Far beyond the starry sky. I shall wing my flight to worlds unknown; I shall reign with Him on high. (Refrain)
