My friend has got fibroids. They are many. They are large. Her gynaecologist scheduled her for an abdominal myomectomy which is a surgical procedure that opens the abdomen so that these growths in her uterus are cut out. So she called her mother to tell her about this sad news. The mother scolded her for being unmarried and without a child at the age of forty-one years. The mother said that fibroids are an illness for nuns, Mother Superiors, Sisters, and barren women. My friend has lived a full life of deep academic study, built a great research career, and enjoyed intense travel all over the world. She built herself a string of rental apartments in the capital city and also owns a busy highway restaurant and lodge. Unlike her married siblings, she sends money for food and upkeep to her parents on a weekly basis. And yet, because she still is unmarried to a man, her mother feels that my friend is incomplete and unfulfilled. Rather than offer comfort and support, my friends mother moaned about the possibility that the doctors were going to cut out the womb. Her mother bluntly told her that for years she had been praying to God to allow her one trip to a hospital to witness this daughter producing a baby. The mother confessed she was now embarrassed to have to be going to hospital to witness the removal of a womb! My friend lost it and told her mother not to bother coming at all. The pressures we face as women are horrific and ceaseless!!!
