My friends Doc Wendell & Ron Wynn are appreciated by yours truly in part cuz not many jazz folks here on FB. Had mentioned not being crazy re Wayne Shorter or Freddie Hubbard. They gave me some homework the other day. Listening to old Blue Note, and other labels. I listened to old Blue Note & other labels. Heres my take. Hubbard - I do not like Red Clay one little bit, nor do I like the CTI label at all. In fact CTI more or less sucks. Some of the older Hubbard stuff is good, Id say avg or 3 stars. Off the top of my head; hes not in the top 10 of trumpet players, nor in the same chapter. I have Louis, Miles, and Diz at the very top. The next level includes Chet Baker, Fats Navarro, Lee Morgan, Roy Eldridge (love him), Red Rodney and Woody Shaw, without checking my 1500 jazz LPS, I know I might be missing somebody else. Shorter -- Right now concluding my homework, listening to his LP; Adams Apple. Good playing, although Herbie Hancock is not blowing me away on the keys. Shorter can play. Ill be listening to early stuff. However, I can name at least 30 sax players that I like a lot more. The total might be at least 40, and maybe even as many as 50. The range of jazz that I love is somewhat tight. Sure there are many exceptions. I hate jazz fusion & elevator music often called soul jazz. Avante Guard that might as well have been blown out of my rear end. Like some big band, a couple vibe players, about 20 trumpet players, and some vocalist. Nina Simone & Billie Holiday at the top. Not crazy about a lot of piano players, I dig Mose Allison & Monk the most!!!. For me its be-bop, its the west coast sound; its quartets and quintets. And Sun Ra is Sun Ra AMEN. Most the of the jazz I like was recorded 40s through mid 60s. In the early 70s I saw Supersax, Warne Marsh, Art Pepper, and Red Rodney many times, loved them dearly. Dont think I could ever attend a 2-3 day jazz festival, would be bored to tears, and fear deeply that Id have to put up with far too much crap. I might even have to pull out my CD player and listen to the Cramps or Gene Vincent to keep from falling asleep from complete boredom. Now there is one act that I flat out love, when hes live; Trombone Shorty, but I passed on one of his CDS today. Kermit Ruffins is not far behind. Thank you Doc and Ron.
