My garden has not done well this year, which was surprising given the bounty last year. Throughout all this summer, it managed 3 green peppers, 3 banana peppers, maybe a dozen tomatoes, 2 squash, 4 misshapen cucumbers, 0 zukes, and a small handful of scallions. However, the only productive plant has been green beans, yielding many meals all summer. Two weeks ago, the garden was done, given the state of browning and pest ridden leaves, and I intended to pull all up today (Oct 21). To my surprise, I picked all the green beans I could carry–enough for 2 or 3 meals for us both. And there are still small ones coming! Green bean vines are an exercise in pattern recognition. Every time I pick them, I have to be careful to always immediately grab one when I see it, otherwise looking back they usually disappear. I have gone carefully through the vines many times thinking I got them all, only to discover at least a handful that I missed. Nifty camouflage and an amazing plant.
