My grandfather Antonio (Tony) Volpe, who came from Abruzzo, Italy, to America in 1910, gained American citizenship by serving in World War II. He first lived in Sopris, Colorado with his folks. He wrote and asked my grandmother, Maria Caterina Perasso, who at the time lived in Piedmonte, Northern Italy, to marry him. She agreed and came by herself to America, and they married and moved to Pueblo, Colorado. Grandpa Tony was wounded in the war, a bullet in his back and leg, and was awarded the Purple Heart.
