My grandfather , Pte Pickup joined the 2/5 Battalion (TA) of the Lancashire fusiliers in 1914 , signing up at the drill hall in bury . He was deployed to the Dardanelles campaign , Gallipoli in particular , this photograph was taken in Egypt before he went into action after the final part of his training . He was wounded in Gallipoli and evacuated to Egypt in 1915/1916 , part of the shrapnel had to be left in him . He continued to serve during the rest of the war 1 as a part of the machine gun corp . We are unsure where , as most records of his service were destroyed in the blitz in 1941 , he never spoke about it in detail . In 1938 being too old to join up again ,he became a civilian driver at 35 MU RAF heywood , he spent the Second World War driving throughout the country delivering vehicles and equipment . He was one of the lucky ones he came home and raised a family.
