My grandfather used to be an electrician and tomorrow would have been his birthday. As a kid growing up, I spent a lot of time at my grandparents house but I never knew what my grandfather did for a living. I didnt know anything about his life until after his death. When youre a kid, you dont really think about stuff like that. At least I didnt! Since I moved from Maine to Florida and started in the electrical trade, I recently learned more about my grandfather and his life. I never knew how much we each had in common. Anyhow, this is my grandfathers story and I would like to share it with you. He was born on Jan. 10, 1921, in South Shields, England to electrician John J. Joyce and Mildred Suddards Joyce. He came to this country as a young lad and grew up on Munjoy Hill in Portland, Maine. He attended Portland schools and graduated from Portland High School in 1938. John joined the Civilian Conservation Corps before joining the Navy. In the Navy, he was an aviation radioman 1st Class, USNR V-6. He served from April 14, 1942 until Jan. 9, 1946 and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal for his service. He served in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific. After the war, John became an electrician and in 1964, was elected as Business Manager for the union Local # 567. He held this job for 12 years and was appointed by Governor Curtis onto the Maine Electricians Licensing Board. In 1975, John was appointed from Washington as an international representative, District of New England. While serving as an international representative, John was put on a council of I.B.E.W. Construction Contractors called N.E.C.A. He retired in 1987.
