My grandmother always sent us birthday cards with a crisp one dollar bill in them. It was a sure thing- that card. The cake might fall, there might be more pressing needs than a birthday present (one year, I recall, my father having been out of work for two years, it was a new vacuum...) there was always that thick envelope with the Hallmark Card she bought at the department store in town...I cannot remember the name of it...Streeters?, There was always the consistency of that dollar, the surety that someone was out there and would quickly and gracefully come to your rescue whether or not you knew you needed rescuing.
