My grandsons first day of school today will be memorable for sure, but I do so hope and pray that his WONT be as memorable as mine... We lived just around the block on Brookwood Terrace from Southside Elementary School, so it was an easy stroll down the sidewalk for me and mom on that very first morning of first grade. My older brother and sister had already started Jenkins Jr. High and were on their way walking in a different direction. Dad had already left for work but gave me the thumbs up and a hand shake before he left. Not having had the benefit of pre-school or kindergarten I was somewhat naïve about the ways of school. So much so that when the bell rang for first recess I noticed all the kids hurriedly rushing to the door as if school was already over for the day. I must have been in a daze or not paying much attention to the kids gathering in the court yard as I made my way out the side door and proceeded to walk back down the sidewalk to our house. This was about 10 oclock in the morning and I was thinking this school thing was going to be a snap as I moseyed back to the house. I knocked on the front door and no one was home. The door was locked so I proceeded down the sidewalk to our neighbor Dot Waters house where I had spent a lot of time playing in her attic. Nobody was home there either but her door was unlocked so I proceeded in and up the stairs to the attic to root around in all that neat stuff she kept up there. Turns out that she and my mom had gone to the store together and when they got home there was a police car parked in front of the house with a policeman and my dad standing in the front yard. Seems the school had called in a missing persons report and they were out beating the bushes for me. The first place mom and Dot Waters thought to look was in her attic, where they all found me wondering what all the hubbub was about. So I got a ride back to school in a police car and thanked God that mom and dad were too embarrassed to spank me. I picked up really quick on the rules of school after that. ;)
