My great-grandmothers born name was Martha Benjamin. She was Sephardic, with roots in England going back to the seventeenth century. Martha was descended from a fifteenth century Spanish dude who became involved in some interesting escapades including funding Christopher Columbuss voyage to the New World, assisting in the marriage of Queen Isabella I to Ferdinand II of Aragon, and an entanglement with Torquemada. She married a Levi called Harry with regard to whom there is no current data on zigzag scars, and the first of their four sons, Sydney, was born on Boxing Day in 1914. He was a shy and quiet man who worked in radar during World War II and ended up owning a couple of electrical shops which stocked things like records, aerials, radios and stereos. Sydney spent his retirement in Bag End doing civilised things like calligraphy, carpentry and crosswords. If you encounter an illustrated Desiderata round these parts, chances are twas made by him.
