My hand hovered over the download button. You see, I had to - TopicsExpress

My hand hovered over the download button. You see, I had to download an update to my phones Facebook app, when something else caught my eye: Candy Crush Saga... and it was free! Those of you with an iPhone or Android may not appreciate this excitement, but I have a windows phone, and we dont get a lot of good, free apps. The games on my phone are mostly for our older son...and I did love playing Candy Crush on my PC. And yet, I hesitated. Im really striving to be a better steward of my time. That game is so addicting. If I could play it, lose my five lives and stop, that would be one thing. If I could just play it for five minutes as a mental break, that would be good. But I know me, and I know my distractions. I would fall down into the Candy Crush vortex and never want to leave it. In Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Dr. Covey has a time matrix and time killers like the game mentioned above would fall into the Not-Urgent, Not-Necessary section. Im pleased to report my phone is still Candy Crush Saga-less, at least for now! Its hard to deny self sometimes. There are things out there that we know are just time suckers and we do them anyway. Is that a bad thing? Not always, but it can be. It depends what else we are accomplishing with our time. Did you send that note of encouragement you meant to send today? Did you spend time helping your kids accomplish a task or play a game together? Have you been on for ten hours and you just need a little down time before jumping back into the fray? Have you done something today that would strengthen your relationship with God? I think those are all factors and things to ask ourselves before we plunk down in front of yet another mindless game that has no lasting benefit. Its your time, theyre your relationships, you know your situation better than anyone else. Im not going to bat an eyelash if you have this game on your phone, its not my business and Im not trying to make you feel bad. What I am trying to do is raise an awareness of things that might need our attention. Sometime, even good, worthy causes might have to be turned down, in order for us to accomplish what God would have us do. So, before committing yourself to that twelfth church obligation or agreeing to bake three dozen cookies for the boy scout fundraiser, factor in what you might be losing out on if you do it. Its okay to say no occasionally...even if you are saying it to yourself! But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23
