My heart breaks as I envision the Jewish people of Paris this morning, at the market preparing for Shabbat, when Al-Qaeda terrorists continued their destructive, hateful rampage by taking hostages and murdering innocent people. Shabbat is a day of renewal, a time to focus on the spirit and the profound nature of the human condition. These Muslim terrorists attempted to deny this privilege to the Jewish people of France and the world at large, but we will not let them succeed, now or ever. If we must go to war to protect our freedoms, then that is what must be done. Freedom is not free. May my Jewish friends and family have a peaceful, reflective, gracious Shabbat, and may everyone else have a peaceful, reflective, gracious Saturday. Shabbat shalom.
