My heart is heavy today…last night I hit a raccoon while driving home from yoga class. The worst part is that I couldnt stop to help him. I was driving on a two-lane road with no shoulder and there was a car so close behind me that I couldnt even see his headlights (WHY do people have to tailgate??!!) The road is not the safest at night (a guy was shot there last year - Norwood Avenue for anyone local) and there was no place to pull over. I called Dave in tears and was going to pick him up to come check out the raccoon with me since it wasnt far from our house. He talked me out of it and said we just had to let it be. I went online to see what I could have done and people were saying to call Animal Control…but I know that they are severely understaffed and its hard to get them to come pick up dogs and cats much less a probably-not-alive raccoon. Who are we supposed to call in these instances? What can we do to help in situations when we hit wild animals and its not safe to pull over? I feel terrible.
