My heart is just wrenching as continued news keeps pouring in about Malaysian Airlines Flight 17. The flight was traveling from the Netherlands to Kuala Lumpur when I was shot down by mid to long range missiles over Eastern Ukraine, where there has been ongoing conflicts. For close friends, everyone knows I travel to and do a LOT of work in both Ukraine and Malaysia. I was fortunate not to be on this plane - instead I traveled to Melbourne, Australia several days earlier. More importantly, I am mourning all of the 295 who perished tragically on that flight, including at least three of my friends and colleagues who were traveling here to Melbourne for the International AIDS Conference. One of them, Joep Lange, was a former President of the International AIDS Society and his loss will be resoundingly felt throughout the world for the compelling work he has done for so long to promote HIV treatment and prevention globally. My heart and my condolences go out to all those who perished along with their friend and family ... they will truly be missed.
