My heart weeps. Just yesterday, during indoor recess, I had a quick conversation with one of my more introverted students who wasnt really interested in doing anything during recess. I asked him Where do you live? He said Hilltop. I asked him what its like to live there. He said he couldnt go out much to play with friends because it was dangerous. My Warner friends know: This is what we deal with. And this is obviously going to be a hot topic when we return on Monday. So, why do we continue to allow politicians like Gov. Jack Markell to say things like the teachers at my school have low expectations (as he did AGAIN in his State of the State speech this week) when its clear HIS understanding of the dynamics in OUR Priority Schools is far outside the realm of reality. My students need help. And the Common Core and Smarter Balanced assessment are not the help they need. Neither is labeling the schools and teachers within and telling them they suck and that youre going to shut them down. Shout out to Devon Hynson for being there and doing what he does best for his community. I cant imagine what youve witnessed, my friend.
