My highlights of Bonnaroo 2014: *There are great musicians, and then, there are Great Musicians. They are artists who tap into that a spiritual strata where they commune with other worlds and they take you along for the journey; they are people like Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Derek Trucks. Id seen Trucks playing with the Allman Bros a few times over the years, but seeing him unleashed in his own band, Tedeschi Trucks Band, is really something to behold. His wife, Susan Tedeschi, is a great musician, Derek is a Great One. *Wonderful surprises - bands Id never heard of or gave little attention to - who were awesome: J. Roddy Walston & the Business, and Jamestown Revival. I stumbled on Walston on a small stage as I was headed over to watch NHL Finals on the big screen. They are a hard rock/power pop four piece who were absolutely smoking. I have to give my daughter credit for texting me, Youve GOT to see this - Jamestown Revival. They are a roots/americana duo backed by three additional players who are wonderful. Theyve recently moved back to Austin from LA - Ill be stalking them during my time in TX. *The band I didnt think I liked until I saw them: Arctic Monkeys. They rock much harder than I expected and they are gooooood. *Watching the LA Kings beat the NY Rangers for the Stanley Cup while surrounded by drunken Rangers fans. Although it being they were Roo-attendees, they were mellow and nice… even in defeat. I must way, hockey jerseys worn with dreadlocks and Birkenstocks is an odd fashion combination. *Running into Pete and Bobby Farrelly after their Dumb and Dumber Q&A. Being a part of the team who made THERES SOMETHING ABOUT MARY was a special time in my life. It was good to see the boys and reconnect. *Drive By Truckers were, and remain, my favorite rock and roll band. Ive touted them many times before, but my nickname for them is Skynyrd Cohen - very literate songs (Leonard Cohen) very loud guitars (Lynyrd Skynyrd) *Elton John wholly deserves his status as an ICON emeritus. And Jack White wholly deserves status as an ascending Icon. *Kanye West is a self-absorbed dick. About 50,000 other Rooites will agree with me. They left too. *Acts I sat through whole sets: Elton John, Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, Blackberry Smoke, Tedeschi Trucks, Drive By Truckers, Mastodon, Ice Cube, Lionel Richie, The Avett Brothers, Janelle Monae, Blackberry Smoke, Carolina Chocolate Drops *partial sets: Skrillex, J Roddy Walston and the Business, Chvrches, Shovels & Rope, Kanye West, Jamestown Revival *sets Im bummed I missed: Flaming Lips, D. Trucks Super Jam, Fitz and Tantrums, Cage The Elephant, Amo Lee *Had a great time hanging out with friends, Danny Lamb, Devry Rogers Lamb, and my girls. Were already making plans for next year. WOO HOO ROO
