My historical research has suddenly got very interesting. Remember how I was looking up why the nearby village of Mohringen had a thing about witches? Well, between 1662-65 there was a pogrom against men and women suspected of sorcery. It started with a spurned adolescent young gay man accusing his former beloved of sorcery. A young lawyer, Daniel Hauff took up the case and literally made his career by burning anybody suspected of witchcraft after torturing a confession out of them. It got so bad that the only thing that stopped it was the poisoning of Hauff by members of the city council. By that stage, 26 or so had gone up in flames. Tell me that isnt some High Gothic melodrama right there!
