My home away from home right now (but where really is home for nomads?), with a hot tub right outside the French doors, and a 360 degrees’ panorama of mountains that rise to over 9000 feet. Squaw Valley Ski Resort in Olympic Valley, California, is one of the largest ski areas in the USA, and was host site for the entire 1960 Winter Olympics. Not far away, and near Donner Pass, the area receives heavy maritime snowfall, frequently reaching 40 feet or more in winter. Unless El Nino kicks in big time, it will fall far short of that this 2014/2015 season, and the snow-making machines will be called into action. In fact, as I look out the window right now, while writing, the machines have just started up and are making snow. To give an idea of the severity of the precipitation problem in California this year, Eureka (far north of the state) has usually had around 41” of rain by now; currently that stands at less than 5”. San Francisco’s normal is about 24” (similar to London, surprisingly!), and in the extreme south of San Diego, it should be over 10”, but hasn’t even got to 1”.
