My hometown of Jersey City lost a true gentleman, a true giant who cared for so many people today when we lost Bill Maurer, who was sick and gone within a month. Billy was a long time Jersey City employee working in the Risk Management department, but he was also a great baseball and softball umpire. He was so respected as a Little League umpire that he once worked the Little League World Series in Williamsport. He volunteered his services for several different Little Leagues and Cal Ripken leagues in Jersey City forever. A man with a warm heart who greeted me with a hug instead of a handshake. I bet I wasnt the only one. My heart goes out to Billys family. His daughter Donna has been my physical therapy partner for the past two months. I always said Say Hello to your old man for me. I always thought Id see him again. God bless Billy for being such a wonderful, caring considerate man. I will miss him dearly.
