My husband says that I don’t blow my own horn enough and in fact - TopicsExpress

My husband says that I don’t blow my own horn enough and in fact it makes me uncomfortable to do so. But today I want to share a complement I received yesterday. The message within it is so much bigger than how well we do our job at Dupree Catering and Events. This past week, I had the privilege and honor of catering several events for a family wedding of long time clients. Over many months we worked with their wedding planner, Anthony Luscia, from New York City, whose day job is the Special Project Editor at Martha Stewart Weddings. Anthony was an absolute delight to work with - very down to earth, receptive to our suggestions and appreciative of the great wealth of beauty we have here in the Bluegrass. And he created a breathtakingly beautiful setting for the wedding celebration. I have known and worked for this family for many years and have seen their children grow up. I wanted everything to be perfect for their wedding which had many moving parts (not the least of which was the weather - tornadoes in the area after the tents went up). Last night after our delicious dinner was served and Martine Holzmans stunning cakes were being cut, I was breathing a sigh of relief. Anthony and I were walking over to check on the late night party set up and as we walked, I said, kind of cocky like, “So Anthony, are we as good as the caterer’s in New York?”. Anthony said, “You are better than the caterers in New York - well, except for one, (name withheld) - his food is beautiful and tastes good but he does these tiny bites and tiny portions and everyone leaves his parties hungry.” Then he said, “There is LOVE in your food. You can taste it.” If I serve the best food but do it without love, I have done nothing. If I have the best customers in town but do not love them I am nothing. If I have the best employees (and I do) but do not love them I am nothing. Love is what makes me get out of bed and work 14 hour days and pray for my customers to be blessed by the jobs we do. Love is what makes me ache for or weep with my employees and my customers when unimaginably sad things happen to them. Love is what makes it hurt so much when people leave me. Love is what gives me joy and helps me laugh in the middle of this really hard work we do. I am the luckiest person in the world to get to do a job I love with good people all around me. Thank you, Janie Thompson! You are the smartest, best chef I’ve ever had. Of all the risks I’ve taken in my business life, the greatest risk was to love people. It’s also given me the greatest reward. Martines Pastries
