My inspiration for new works sometimes travels through the universe. I read lots of scientific magazines and try to visualize some of those brain-breaking hypotheses generated from interstellar and microscopic explorations. My piece, “Day of Three Suns” is directly inspired by a description of new interpretations of wobbly lights seen through the powerful telescopes at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. These observations have lead some scientists to speculate that planets in distant galaxies could have orbits that resemble figure eights as they travel around and among multiple suns. I used my own dyed, discharged, painted and burned fabrics to create an imaginary view of how it might be to see multiple suns from one planet! This piece, “Day of Three Suns” (40”H x 53”W) will be part of an international art exhibit, juried by Dr. Andrew K. Johnston of the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies at the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution. The long-running exhibit is entitled Cosmos: Imagining the Universe , February 13 – July 26, 2015 at Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in Dowell, Maryland. I hope you will get a chance to visit the exhibit.
