My introduction to improvisational music was an album by the Crusaders called, Images. Joe Sample and the Crusaders bridged the gap between acoustic music with intricate chord progressions and electric instrumental music with one chord/one scale vamps (and a back beat). That recording for me was the first time that I heard instrumentalists improvise over song forms and it changed everything for me musically. Needless to say, I wore out two copies of it and have it on my iPod. Thank You So Much, Mr. Joe Sample. It was you and the Crusaders that helped open my world to Miles, Monk and Coltrane. Your touch on the keys was superb and compositions timeless. I would go on to learn many of your tunes and it was a pleasure meeting you back in the 90s when we shared the bill (Donald Byrd) at the Hollywood Bowl Jazz Festival. Walk Well with the Ancestors.
