My job does not make me rich. I struggle to pay my bills every month on my meager income. But I am better off than a lot of people that do the same work as I. This last weekend I was doing caricatures in Santa Monica. It was colder than last week as the summer weather changes to winter. The days become shorter and the sun sets as early as 6:30 PM. The hard months of winter cold lay ahead and that means less time at my job and fewer sales. This will last 6 months. But I bring JOY to my clients. I often get people that are very interested in ANIME and have never seen a cartoonist do Anime Portraits. I guess I am the first in the U.S. to adapt the style to caricature drawing. I got a family from New York last Sunday, ages from 6 to 15. They were jumping up an down when they saw my sign that advertized ANIME. The family of 6 all got a picture and used the word AWESOME over and over to describe my work. The parents beamed with pride for their happy children getting the unbridled joy that only comes from a childs smile. Latter I drew more clients that are rabid fans of the Genre. They come in all ages and cultures. Black, Brown, White, Asian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, and Christian. All seem to know of or strongly admire ANIME and desire to see themselves in a portrait of that style. The summer months were good but bills and costs of living keep me in an economic decline. But in many ways I am RICH in the feeling I get from a grateful customer that takes home a piece of art that they can only get from me on a cold and gloomy day in the foggy Fall of a Santa Monica sidewalk.
