My kid was pretty tired tonight. He had gone to school at 7:30 am, stayed until 5 pm for track and then at 7:15 had to go back to school for a class project. He is filming a concert. I waited until he had eaten and then told him about Eric Garner and how they will not indict the cop who killed him. He woke up and expressed his shock and anger. I told him that he needed to understand something fundamental. I said, You are of color, you are male, and you look older than your 15 years. If you are confronted by a cop (s) you MUST immediately show you are unarmed. You must be calm and you must communicate that you are not going to react violently. But son, make no mistake, there is absolutely no guarantee you will not be handcuffed, and then either tazed or executed. They are capable of killing you. They will most likely not be brought to justice and you will be gone. Do you understand? He said yes he did. This is the nation we live in, I told him. No point in pretending it is a safe place for young colored men or any one in the 99 percent. It never was and it is clear it wont be. He assured me he understood and I dropped him off at school. AT least I know he is safe there for now. As I told a pal today, Im not afraid of muggers or gang members attacking him. I am scared of the police.
