My last post on how Democrats might be motivated to VOTE elicited - TopicsExpress

My last post on how Democrats might be motivated to VOTE elicited a number of responses which included TERM LIMITS. This has been a refrain in a number of other posts so I thought it might be important to comment. Term limits are probably the worst idea for our Democracy. It certainly sounds good....eliminate the number of years any member of Congress may serve....but in reality it moves the power from the legislators to the lobbyists. In Ohio, we were dumb enough to enshrine term limits in our Constitution....with awful results. The special interests took over the writing of legislation, institutional memory was replaced by those who lobbied, year after year, and talented public officials, on both sides of the aisle, were replaced by novices to the legislative process. Now I know some will say that laws were written by lobbyists before term limits, and that would be true. But, many of those laws were struck down by legislators who had no fear of losing their positions. Others will say that it created musical chairs ...a la Oelslager/Schuring....and thats true also. But, that result is more an exception than the rule. Term limits simply deny the making of great legislative leaders, who fully understand the processes of government and have the public interest in mind. Imagine Warren Buffet or Steve Jobs being replaced every four years.....Term limits is a sweet sounding idea. When you hear the music, though, its way off key !
