My last post was in regards to acronyms used by teens on the internet... Someone commented that 90% of teens dont use them or have a clue of what they mean... I felt that my reply would be best suited as a post to explain why I never ignore these types of things or brush them off as silly assumptions... When it comes to minors on the internet I am very protective and this is why!! When I was fifteen and the internet was fresh on scene I played a lot of role playing games on BBS platforms, I used many codes similar to the ones featured in the article and I did in fact become a victim of an internet predator... I didnt know what some of the acronyms meant and I didnt want to stand out so I would just use them to seem cool... Next thing I know I have a boyfriend and he came to my aunts house to pick me up for the afternoon... Next thing I know, We are in his dads bedroom and he gives us condoms and tells us that it is natural to explore each other... I was scared and afraid to say no, if I did would I fall victim to something worse? (I also posted on this topic today if you scroll back a few posts) All I remember was the video camera on a tripod in the corner and the fear of wondering if it was on continues to haunt me to this day... When it comes to these type of warnings, I take them serious!! To me its not a hilarious assumption!! Parents, be cautious with your kids social media access, it is not something to brush off or take lightly, even if your teen tells you that their peers never use those types of acronyms and that it is just something a paranoid parent made up... Listen to the woman who once used them and by doing so became the perfect victim!
