My last thirty minutes: In the car on the way home from swimming. S: Im really proud of you for going to practice tonight. I know you didnt want to after five hours of basketball and tennis camp today. But you did it! G: I dont think I can do it again tomorrow. Im tired. S: Im open to that. Lets see how camp goes. G: Actually I do want to go to swimming. S: ( noting little red flags) Um. Ok. Sounds good. G: mommy, I forgot my glasses at practice. S: hopefully the school is still open. G: (Upon successfully retrieving glasses) I dont really want to go to swimming. I just said that because I remembered that I forgot my glasses. S: Ok. So you told a little fib and then decided it was best to do the right thing and tell the truth? Long pause. G: yes. Short pause. G: mommy, why did you cheer for the bronchos in the Super Bowl? S: um. Well because Peyton manning used to be the quarterback for the colts and, well, thats as good a reason as any. G: oh. And. Do you think of you stood really still and there was no wind and you shot a gun straight up in the air the bullet would come right back into the gun? S: dont know. Dont try. Another long pause. G: am I in trouble? S: no, why? G: good. Can I have some of the fine dark chocolate you have hiding in your purse? How could I say no?
