My lecturer, Dr. Pere once said, You can be a surgeon, and deal with laparoscopy and other surgical procedures. Or you can be a general physician who specializes in dispensing paracetamol. And we all guffawed at his statement. In my class, 40% want to go into Obstetrics/Gynaecology or Paediatrics, like alobam, Elvis, this boy will go places, I swear. 60% want to be surgeons. Even big-headed Joseph wants to do Cardiothoracic S. Now, a certain negligible percentage are either clueless on where to specialize , or do want to remain general practicioners. This is the group I fall into. The thing with surgery is, you get to meet one-time patients that need a resection or lobectomy or whatever. Surgeons rarely have close one-on-one relationships with their patients. Except those with malignant tumors though. Its mostly: fly in, perform tests, decide on a surgical procedure, explain the possible complications to the patient, blow, succeed or fail. Surgeons are well-paid though. Especially consultants. Especially those practising outside Naijas borders. But most of the other specialties involve a lifelong relationship with patients. You know, like Obi has malaria this week, hepatitis in six months time, Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever next year (lol). That sort of thing. You end up treating Obi for the rest of your practice. And theres always that possibility of running into Obi somewhere. Especially if, by God, youre a dedicated doctor. Like Oga Deji , big man, humane human, shining future. I saw a testimony. May God bless your efforts Sir. I hear that it is getting more difficult to get placements for residency programs in Naija. And clueless GEJ dares sack those who manage to get in. Annabel , Anita , unu jisiekwa ike oh. Maka ife anyi tinyere ukwu anyi nime aburo obele ife. Onye obula wetere oghere iga America, ya enwela obi abuo oh! Nothing works here, I swear. Me sef still dey indecisive. Let us see what tomorrow holds. Ndeewo nu.
