My letter to the Dept of Transport: Dear Mike Thank you for - TopicsExpress

My letter to the Dept of Transport: Dear Mike Thank you for your interest in my issues with the Perth Metropolitan train services. I would also be greatful if we can resolve this issue without making a formal complaint to the Equal Opportunity Commission. Transperth train services are usually very good and have an accurate audio announcement service announcing the next station. However due to the ongoing construction work at the Wellington Street Train Station in Perth, often trains may arrive at different platforms than their usual ones with no announcements as which platform the passengers are being dropped off. As a person who’s blind, I find this to be very disorientating and have got to the wrong platforms, caught wrong trains and went to different places, and sometimes, found myself in dangerous situations. I called Transperth several times and asked if the drivers could please announce what platform they are arriving at in Perth. Most of the times a message was taken and I was called back in a few days time and told that Drivers should not make any announcements as this would be an Occupational safety and health (OSH) issue for them. However, very rarely some train drivers do announce in Perth if they arrive at a different platform than the usual one. It does not seem to be an OSH issue for them. Train drivers in Sydney make announcements and it does not seem to be an OHS issue for them either. When the trains arrive in Perth and stop at a platform, just before opening the doors, if the drivers could announce the platform they are on will not only help people who are blind and vision impaired but also tourists as well. This should not cause a significant delay in train arrival and departure times or OSH issues for drivers. The announcement of platforms in Perth could also be inco-operated in the train’s audio announcement system. Your help in getting a good outcome in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Should you have further enquiries in this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. My contact details are listed below for your information. Kind regards And this is the response I received from Mike Browne:) Nihal I have spoken to Pat Italiano, the General Manager Transperth Train Operations and he was extremely helpful. He understands your issue entirely and said he would get his people to look in to it. It may take several days for them to get back to you. If you have not heard anything by this Friday, or if you are unhappy with the response please do not hesitate to contact me. Regardless I would like to know what the outcome is and how satisfied you are with the result. I am not sure why your query through regular channels could not be addressed and I apologise. I trust we will be able to get a satisfactory outcome for you now. Thank you
