My letter to the Greenwich Newspaper which I am happy to say they printed yesterday. Also planning on sending it to a few other outlets as well, you know what amazes me...If I were Black I would have droves of lawyers and media outlets covering this but if Native American....Well, thats a different story..when that happens its always... Oh, your overreacting or Do you really believe its that or just your perception You see, it makes people feel uncomfortable if it happens to a Native American yet, seems totally acceptable if its a African American and heres why: Africa was invaded, they raped the land and then brought them over here as slaves. We on the other hand had our land raped, stolen and suffered a Mass Genocide which is what the country was built upon. Africa is still Africa, Turtle Island though is now America, we are in effect their dirty little secret. Something they have yet to this day own up to so when we are in the spotlight its a reminder of that fact........ Racial Discrimination In Greenwich? Ive lived in this town since 1976 and never thought Id ask this question. Sadly though, over the past few months a few incidents occurred which make me wonder whether discrimination truly does exist in our community. Recently the owner of a retail space did not want to rent me a office space when he found out that I was Native American. A neighbor, commented that I looked creepy, and proceeded to install a fence in the front of our shared property line just on one side That wouldnt have been too bad if she hadnt also placed surveillance cameras aimed at my house and yard! Now I realize that the typical Greenwich resident isnt Native American with long, hair but, as a successful jewelry designer I question why my heritage and appearance should be justification to deny me a store rental or to permit a neighbor to invade my privacy with 24/7 surveillance cameras. I know there are good decent people in this community, I have a excellent repore with many of them especially my other neighbors. No one deserves to be treated in such a manner, Im the last person to ever bring up race but when faced with such issues I cant help but feel my rights have been violated. I really like Greenwich, its a wonderful place to live, and I hope that these are isolated incidents doesnt reflect something deeper going on within this community, there is no room for discrimination in Greenwich!
