My letter which you may use as a template. Dear Congressman Amodei, You may know me by now as an outspoken leader of local initiatives in Washoe County including puppy store/puppy mill restrictions where we have already won a great victory by having one store close and another follow our outline to convert from selling puppies to selling supplies and hosting local shelters for adoption events. Im also working to have foie gras and food produced by forced feeding banned on County and City public buildings and property including spaces rented out to the public. Im concerned with the amount of violations Charles River Labs has with the USDA and the treatment of their animals including the deaths of dozens of primates in an air conditions accident and the loss of life of a monkey that got put through the cage washer. The recent coyote hunting contest has gotten a lot of people outraged who didnt know the animals had no protections and Ive begun organizing around banning wildlife killing contests as California has. I know you, too, have great concerns for animal welfare. I am hopeful and in earnest you might consider supporting Rep. Jim Morans Traveling Exotic Animal Protection Act (TEAPA) HR4525 to protect wild animals in circuses which one can easily see as a pathetic holdover of the bygone Victorian era. A circus animal’s life of ongoing deprivation is punctuated by moments of physical violence. Investigations have documented a pattern of abusive training methods where pain, punishment and fear are employed to force these wild animals to do unnatural and pathetic tricks. The tools of the trade include bullhooks, whips, and electric prods which are used to hit, “hook,” and shock animals. Over 27 countries around the world, including Austria, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal, Singapore, Costa Rica, Peru, Bolivia and others, have adopted national legislation prohibiting or restricting the use of wild and exotic animals in circuses, along with hundreds of local bans in place worldwide – over 200 in the UK, and hundreds in Europe and South America, as well as Asia. Best Regards,
