My list of Malaysian Writing for people to check out: 1. Growing up with Ghosts by Bernice Chauly (props to my former research assistant for plugging this book to me) 2. Spirits Abroad by Zen Cho (though I havent opened the anthology yet I have read and recced some of the stories from it, I think Zen is one of the best of our current crop of millenial writers) 3. King of the Sea by Dina Zaman 4. Rice Mother by Rani Manicka (must give props to her for representing the Ceylonese diaspora in Pahang in fiction) 5. In a Far Country by K.S. Maniam (possibly my favourite Malaysian novel ever) 6. Sejarah Melayu (doh, considering this is one of the reasons I wanted to be a lit/folktale scholar back when I was a teenager) 7. Jungle of Hope by Keris Mas (although the English version has nothing on the beauty of the Malay version, which is also an influence on me as a writer, esp when writing about the interior) 8. Sajak-Sajak Sejarah Melayu by Muhammad Haji Salleh (this is an anthology of poems) 9. Adams Dream by Salleh Ben Joned (another anthology of poems) 10. Evening is the Whole Day by Preeta Samarasan (as maddening as I found some parts of it, I still think it is quite brilliant and look forward to reading future novels by her)
