My little brother, James Craig Harris, died last weekend. He was only 20 months younger, so I do not remember being in this world without him. He was my companion for everything—nursery school, nap time, play like, T.V., dinner, swimming, church, school, Christmas, births of younger siblings, trips to Granny’s, family vacations, The Rodeo, The Fair, and visits with family. He was a wonderful young man, a good son, and a great brother. He was a normal, happy little boy of our time. He was a boy scout, No. 7 on his ball team, and he got to visit the new ASTRODOME. And, we went to Dallas Cowboy games from their beginning--in the Cotton Bowl. He turned my life around by helping me get a student loan to return to school when he was ready to go. He was at my wedding and a loving uncle to my children. He was proud to have been a Marine. His young life was filled with promise. But, for 40 years, all that promise evaporated as he suffered (for lack of a stronger word) with Schizophrenia. I won’t dwell on that nightmare. You would not understand, anyway. The disease mellows, but he was never the same, except for one thing: He always loved those Dallas Cowboys. He was not a fair weather fan. He didn’t care what Jerry Jones was doing. He didn’t stop watching when they were losing. And, I cannot now watch a game without thinking of Craig. As he was struggling last weekend to recover from an emergency heart quadruple bypass, the ICU nurse said she would turn on the game for him. They won! But, his heart was just too depleted to recover, and he died there. He was 62. So, Perhaps, you’ve noticed: Suddenly, the Cowboys look much better—Like champions of old. I am sure the experts think tangible things like the draft, coaching, talent, experience, and such are the reasons. But, I know what is really happening to change their fortunes. The Cowboys are winning, because they are getting some very, very special help from heaven these days from their Number One Fan. I miss him, so. Rest in Peace in God’s loving arms my sweet brother.
