My memories of Willlard Howard Sr. are in abudance today as I received the news of his passing. Little Willard Howard was a grade ahead of me in school and one of my good friends. Big Willard as I called him, was always there for all the school and sports events we had. He was like another daddy to many. He was mama, and daddy, to Willard and Kristi for many years and did a great job! When I started Hiwassee College after high school, Big Willard thought he would go back to school as well. We had a math class together. Instead of him being the old guy in class, he became one of us, a best buddy! We had a ball in that class, hanging out at the student center and studying for our test. We all got an A by the way! That was one of the most fun times of my life, and every time I would run into Big Willard he would always bring it up. Several years back, I got the chance to have two of his grandchildren in my fifth grade class for history. Big Willard was so proud of them! When all three started playing sports, Big Willard was there for everything, just as he was for Little Willard and Kristi. My last memory of seeing Big Willard was at our Veterans Day program at school in November. He came in and sit on the first row. He was so weak and frail. I went down and sit beside him and told him how proud I was to see him. He put his arm around me and told me he loved me, and that seeing me was like a sunshine in his day....broke my heart! You fought the fight my friend! May you rest in peace! To Willard and Kristi, you had an amazing daddy! I am so sorry and love you both! To those sweet grandbabies; Samantha Diane Howard, Trey Howard, and Tyler Hawke..I love you all! Praying for peace and comfort for the whole family!
