My mind is working overtime lately, and I have had some thoughts on fletching placement on the arrow shaft. I talked with Bohning today and shared some thoughts on this. My thought is that the placement of the vane at the furthest point back on an arrow shaft will create the most drag (leverage) from the vane you use, but may be somewhat counterproductive from an accuracy (consistency) standpoint. I have asked Bohning to a little experimenting with the theory I have in mind. I may have to make a video to explain the thought, but basically I believe that placing the tallest point of the vane directly over the rear node of the arrow shaft will yield a more forgiving performance from the arrow. As the arrow flexes in flight, there are 2 points on an arrow that stay directly in the path (trajectory) that the arrow travels. These are called the nodes. generally the front node and rear node will be about 3 in from the ends of the carbon shaft at the front of the arrow and about 5 in from the back. These distances will vary based on the setup. If your vanes are at the end of your shaft they will be moving in and out of the trajectory the arrow is traveling and I believe may cause the nodes to come out of alignment, creating erratic flight. All of this is just a thought but I plan to do some experimenting with the theory and hopefully Bohning can do some high speed video testing and share the results.
