My mini review of The Giver: Before I share my opinion on The Giver, I will say this: I walked into the theatre with an open mind and low expectations. I remember reading The Giver in school, so I had to see the film adaptation. I could NOT stop comparing the book to the movie while watching The Giver. The Giver has a longer beard and Jonas was younger (12 years old) in the book. Instead, The Giver has a shorter beard and Jonas is a little bit older in the film to name a few things. The performance by Brenton Thwaites is mediocre. Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges stood out with good performances. Taylor Swift is useless. Stay in the music industry, Ms. Swift! Katie Holmes, Odeya Rush, Alexander Skarsgård, and Cameron Monaghan deliver solid, but not special performances. The script is weak and needed to be stronger. The character development is non-existent in The Giver. When Jonas receives the memories, it often feels rushed and there are too many montages of the memories. This film needed a longer runtime to explain the memories in depth and what the memories did to Jonas psychologically. The editing and pacing are consistent and seamless. The Giver doesnt feel like ninety minutes. Director Phillip Noyce got the black & white and color right though. The film adaptation of The Giver delivers a handful of faults, but the effort definitely shows and thats something to admire. I highly recommend reading The Giver by Lois Lowry, not seeing the film. The novel is better by a huge margin than the movie. Grade: B / Three Stars out of Four
