My modest contribution to WW1 commemoration; my grandfather J G - TopicsExpress

My modest contribution to WW1 commemoration; my grandfather J G Moore, a Liverpool boilermaker, joined up immediately war was declared and served in France for the duration of the war in the 8th Irish (Liverpool) regiment, wounded, mentioned in dispatches, Ypres, the Somme etc and survived the war with little bitterness toward the Germans; until 1942 when his oldest son George died in a U-Boat attack. He then became a fanatical German-hater, applauding the Russians for taking no prisoners. Then as years passed and the family moved to Australia in batches in the 50s and 60s his youngest son met and married a German girl, my auntie Inge, whod come here to get away from her Nazi bastard father. 1960; Im at the wedding, a boy of 12 as old Granddad says I hope that this wedding will stand as a hopeful indication that our peoples, so similar in so many ways, will never fight each other again and that in our new country we can learn to put aside old hatreds and set ourselves to the task of seeing that our children are spared the curse of war. Amen to that.
