My mom died on this date 12 years ago. Impossible to believe its been that long. Or that the grief is still fresh. The realization of not being able to pick up the phone and call her is difficult still. I remember my mom on her birthday, Mothers Day and holidays; not on the day she died. But lately Ive been wanting to pick up the phone and call her. Quite a bit. My mom had Alzheimers, and the year before she died was irritated that all the TV channels kept replaying planes flying into buildings. Once was enough she declared. Why do they keep repeating this? So difficult to explain. She died the morning after we had severe weather and tornado watches. She took her last breath at the same time the sun burst through her nursing home window. This was one of the times in my life that I experienced the presence of God himself. A half hour later, veterans gave a 21 gun salute which just about scared the bejesus out of all of us. It drew smiles and nervous giggles from us all. I miss my mom today on this Veterans day because I really need to pick up the phone and call her.
